Cocos Island Shark & Sea Turtle Research Trip

An extraordinary opportunity to dive one of the world's great sites

Pricing From: $5,945 USD per person

Duration: 10 days

Operator: Sea Turtle Restoration Project

Join a 10 live-aboard research expedition to Cocos Island National Park to help study the sea turtles and sharks of the region. These trips offer some of the most spectacular opportunities to view and photograph the incredible marine biodiversity of the East Pacific. As a volunteer, you will dive among hammerheads, sea turtles, and huge schools of fish, assisting researchers and supporting conservation efforts directly at the site!

Arrive to San Jose

Participants will need to arrive to San Jose a day prior to the boat departure. Transportation to the dock in Puntarenas will be arranged from your San Jose hotel.

Day 1 - Departure from Puntarenas

Transfer from your San Jose hotel to the dock in Puntarenas (2.5 hours). Upon boarding the boat, you'll meet your crew and fellow travelers and prepare for the journey to Cocos Island.

The expedition will be supported by the experienced and well-known dive company Undersea Hunter S.A, which has been running expeditions to Cocos Island since 1990. We will be using the 130-foot MV Argo, their newest and largest live-aboard vessel.

Participants will be divided into two dive groups which will be under the supervision of an experienced Dive Master/Rescue Diver. Those planning to dive MUST be experienced divers, with PADI or NAUI membership, and have personal DAN insurance. Nitrox is available for certified divers.

Day 2 - Journey to Cocos Island

A travel day. There will be time to arrange dive and camera gear as well as enjoy the Pacific and the sunshine. Also, the group of incredibly experienced divers provides plenty of stories to pass the time. The journey takes about 32 - 36 hours across the beautiful Pacific.

There are videos and the experience of the Captain and crew to help you get excited for the diving...as if you need them! In addition, you may want to take this time to take one of our technical diving courses.

Days 3 - 7 - Cocos Island Exploration

Spent diving the pinnacles around the perimeter of Cocos Island. Divers usually average three dives per day at depths of 60-100 feet or more. Participants will have an opportunity to help tag sharks, deploy receivers, and record data during dives. Seminars and talks provided by PRETOMA and Turtle Island staff after dinners.

Day 8 - Final Diving Day

Make the last 3 dives before the cruise back to Costa Rica and reality!

Day 9 - Return to the Mainland

All day to discuss the diving and to compare your adventures!

Day 10 - Arrival to Puntarenas

Arrival to Puntarenas. Immediately after breakfast you will be transported back to San Jose. We strongly recommend staying one more night on land before flying out, in case of any unforeseen delays.
