El Salvador Sea Turtle Service Trip

ITINERARY

July 6th - Arrive to San Salvador

You will be met by your trip leader, SEE Turtles co-founder Brad Nahill, and your guide at the airport and taken to Ciudad Romero, a rural community an hour and a half drive from the city.

July 7th - Ciudad Romero

This morning, take a tour of Ciudad Romero, including beautiful murals that show the history of the struggles this town has overcome. In the afternoon, we will meet community leaders working to improve life for local residents and visit Mangrove Radio, a youth-run environmental radio station. Overnight in Ciudad Romero.

July 8th – La Limonera

Today, we will visit diverse family farms growing fruit, vegetables, grains, and more. The volunteer project can be helping plant and rotate crops on the demonstration farm, which is part of a program for local farmers seeking to reduce their use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers.

July 9th – Tierra Blanca

Today we will learn about low-tech ecological design projects which improve the quality of life of residents while reducing human impact on local ecosystems. In the afternoon we will learn to make traditional corn pupusas with local families.

July 10th – Isla de Mendez

Today we spend the day in Jiquilisco Bay. We will meet with the local Mangrove Guardians who work to protect sea turtle and fish nesting habitat from illegal fishing activities. In the afternoon, we will go for a dip in the ocean on the beautiful beach at Corral de Mulas. We will stay in rustic cabins at La Pirraya.

July 11th – Turtle Research Day

Today, early risers can go birding before breakfast and catch the morning sunrise. Later, we participate in a study for green sea turtles with local biologists. We capture, measure, tag, release and learn first-hand about these endangered turtles.

At dusk, we'll visit a nearby sea turtle hatchery and help release hawksbill turtle hatchlings if any have hatched during the day. In the evening, we will visit a turtle nesting beach, looking for critically endangered hawksbill sea turtles laying their eggs.

July 12th – Las Mesitas

Today we will visit the first pilot project in ecological mangrove restoration in El Salvador. You will see the ways that local people are restoring the vital wetlands area through a combination of scientific study and hard labor in harmony with nature. In the afternoon, we will visit a cooperative of youth artisans at a beautiful new environmental education center in the village of Las Mesitas.

July 13th – Free Day at Costa del Sol

Relax and enjoy a day at one of the most beautiful stretches of beach in the country at a comfortable resort.

July 14th – Departure Day

Head back home to share your new memories with friends and family!
