Tracking Wild Pandas

Research pandas both in the wild and at a research center

On this journey to the Wanglang Nature Reserve, we hike through bamboo and rhododendron forests to track panda routes. Along the way, we’ll learn about other rare wildlife such as golden monkeys, red pandas, takins, and birds, and get up close to pandas by visiting a base that protects, breeds, and studies them in an enclosed environment. 

ITINERARY

Day 1 - Arrive in Chengdu

Welcome dinner and trip briefing.

Day 2 - Chengdu

Taichi lesson at Wangjianglou Park; Chengdu Panda Breeding and Research Center; Sanxingdui Archeological Museum; Sichuan dinner and opera performance with "face-changing" masks.

Day 3 - Pingwu

Drive to Pingwu County (~ 6 hours); visit local village, rice fields; walk around Baoensi Square where locals play mahjong, have tea and spend their evenings.

Day 4 - Wanglang

Drive to and visit a Baima village; drive to Wanglang Nature Reserve (2.5 hours); afternoon hike around eco-lodge area to get familiar with the environment; presentation on pandas.

Day 5 - Wanglang

Divide into small groups and hike with reserve staff to track wild panda routes; learn about pandas' natural habitats, see evidence of their activities, walk to virgin forests; have picnic lunch on the way.

Day 6 - Wanglang

Hike along the ancient Tea and Horse Caravan Trail, a famed trading route; learn about wild plants from a local Baima Tibetan doctor during the hike.

Day 7 - Jiuzhaigou

Drive to Jiuzhaigou (4 hours); visit Shuzheng Valley if time allows.

Day 8 - Jiuzhaigou

Visit Jiuzhaigou’s Rize Valley, including Five-Flower Lake and Mirror Lake.

Day 9 - Depart Chengdu

Fly to Chengdu in the morning; journey ends.

Price Notes: Pricing based on 4 travelers. Domestic airfare - $250 pp. Single supplement $550.

Excluded: Domestic and international airfare to and from Chengdu, pre-trip and post-trip extensions to Beijing, Shanghai or other parts of China, Chinese Tourist Visa, which is required for most foreign passport holders, meals not included in the itinerary and alcoholic or imported beverages during meals, personal expenses, tips for the local guides and drivers, and excursions and activities not included in itinerary.
