One of National Geographic Traveler's "Tour of a Lifetime", this adventure tour takes you off the beaten path to experience the rich natural history and cultural heritage of this country. Snorkel the Belize Barrier Reef and the Great Blue Hole, one of the world’s most astounding dive sites.
You can also explore the temples, plazas and ball courts of the Lubanntun Maya ruins with the warden, Santiago. Swim to the Blue Creek Cave and look for toucans, monkeys, and green lizards as you paddle down a river.
ITINERARY
Days 1-4 - BELIZE BARRIER REEF & GREAT BLUE HOLE
Upon arrival, your guide will take you to a water taxi for a 90 minute picturesque ride past tropical islands. Here at the Belize Barrier Reef, you'll have three days of exploring the incredible diversity of ocean wildlife by snorkel, kayka and boat.
Among the creatures you are likely to see are stingrays, eagle rays, colorful coral, and nurse sharks. Visit the famous Great Blue Hole, one of the world's best dive sites. Finally, you'll visit Half Moon Caye for a bbq and birdwatching.
Overnight at Turneffe Island Resort or Blackbird Caye Resort.
Days 5-6 - PUNTA GORDA & RIO BLANCO NATIONAL PARK
This morning, you'll transfer to the Belize Municipal Airport for a short flight to Punta Gorda, on the southern Caribbean coast. Take early morning bird walks in the national park with a Mayan guide and explore the Lubaantun Maya ruins with its ancient temples, plazas, and more.
In the afternoon, swim underneath a waterfall. Later, you can visit a Mayan harp player who will show you how he makes his instruments from cedar. Overnight at The Lodge at Big Falls.
Days 7-8 - BLUE CREEK CAVE & PUNTA GORDA
Explore the Blue Creek Cave, a five mile long cave with a waterfall. Later, hike the rainforest with a naturalist, learning about medicinal plants and looking for wildlife. You'll have an opportunity to kayak Belize's Rio Grande and look for birds and iguanas in the trees.
You'll also have an opportunity to visit an organic cacao plantation and learn how chocolate is made. Finally, have a dinner if the local Garifuna (Afro-Indian) style with drummers. Overnight at The Lodge at Big Falls.
Day 9 - FLY HOME
After breakfast, you'll board your short flight back to the Belize International airport in time for your international departure. (Local flight included.)
